Sony Sparks Infringement Row   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: musicvids

Sony has ordered the removal of music videos from Youtube. Apparently, some person calling herself 'Beyonce' had uploaded Beyonce's music videos on the site... except that it was actually Beyonce!

Sony has had many of Beyonce's music videos removed from Beyonce's official channel, claiming copyright infringment.

It is not reported whether this act was intentional or in fact a mistake. Vevo is already unavailable to the UK and now it seems ordinary Youtube channels are also being rigorously kept closed for certain countries.

But this doesn't anger us at all. Music channels on Sky and Virgin Media are only part of paid packages, although there are some free ones out there that have some decent content, but what is the chance they will play the video we want to watch?

Very little.

So if US branches of music companies wish for us to not view their content (unless we pay to do so) then what is there to do but focus primarily on the great British artists instead, whose music we do have legal access to?

If anything, it is reported that acts such as these and the lack of access to Vevo will only serve to put UK fans off artists whose music and videos are unsamplable, destroying the desire to buy the album resulting in a decline in sales for the US music industry here in the UK.

For example, musicvids.tv is a fan of featuring many different kinds of music. It was only while watching the opening sequence of an anime that Japanese band AFKG's 'Haruka Kanata', which was the theme song, was made known to us. Such a brilliant song but without any marketing here in the UK, there was no other way we would have come across it. Officially, this song is banned from Youtube as it infringes Sony's copyright policy.

So without being able to sample music through videos (Youtube being the most popular format for doing so via music videos), potential fans would not become fans.

Scouring through Youtube, many comments musicvids.tv has come across read something along the lines of 'what was the backing song used in the video???' This is how we, in the 21st century, come across new music. Posters will not sway us, that is something we no longer use to judge music. We will only pay for it if it is something we believe it is worth paying for and not every single artist puts out a TV ad.

We predict some good times ahead for UK and Australian bands and artists for the rest of 2010 - so long as they stay away from Vevo...

Lady Gaga's New Video Banned By MTV & Co.   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: musicvids

Lady GaGa is taking the wrap for her shocking new video - after TV channels refused to air the clip.

MTV has deemed it inappropriate for its viewers to watch Lady Gaga's “Telephone“ video, so the music channel is banning the provocative and controversial nine-minute mini movie-cum-music video. Other networks are expected to follow MTV's lead.

But Internet user could not care less. The video has received over 14 million hits just three days since its debut.

The controversial video has riled the sensitivities of some people for its raunchy content, which includes lesbian kissing and a lot of boobs, not to mention parental-advisory-worthy lines.

“Telephone” opens with a bra-less Lady Gaga being escorted to her jail cell by two bra-flashing guards, as female inmates salivate at the new jailbird.

Gaga is then stripped to her undies, prompting someone to quip: “I told you she didn’t have a d—.”

Lady Gaga is rumored to have been born a hermaphrodite.

If you want to form an opinion on your own, just watch the video

Muse Speak Out   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: musicvids

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has revealed his band's disappointment in their record label's decision to stop licensing acts on the company's roster for free streaming services such as Spotify and We 7.

Earlier this month Warner Music CEO Edgar Bromfman announced that none of the label's artists' future releases would be licensed to the services, as "free streaming services are clearly not positive for the industry" - although already-available back catalogues would remain.

The Devon band, who are one of the biggest acts on Warner Music – also home to REM and Red Hot Chili Peppers - argued that the decision will take their music, and the music of their labelmates, away from the ears of potential fans.

Wolstenholme told BBC Newsbeat, "It's like taking your song off the radio, isn’t it? The corporations are setting the rules on these things because they’re clutching at straws. They’ve lost so much money on record sales because of the internet."

He added, "As far as bands are concerned, you just want people to hear your music whichever way they can."

Warner Music Pulls Away from Free Music Streaming   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: user no longer registered

Warner Music has revealed that it plans to stop licensing songs to free online streaming services.

Warner Music's chief executive, Edgar Bronfman explained the decision saying providing free music is “clearly not positive for the industry”.

A Warner Music spokesman later confirmed that the change in policy will not affect current deals meaning the label's large catalogue will remain available on sites like Spotify and We7 for the time being.

But Warner Music's contracts aren’t permanent and if it does not believe in ad-supported services like Spotify, it's likely that it will not opt to continue them.

Warner Music is the third biggest record label in the world. It posted a loss of $17m in the last quarter of 2009 even as its digital sales grew by 8%. Bronfman was critical of Spotify, increasing speculation that the label will eventually ditch the streaming service:

“The ‘get all your music you want for free and then maybe with a few bells and whistles we can move you to a premium price strategy’, is not the kind of approach to business that we will be supporting in the future.”

The initial media response to Bronfman's comments was to claim that Warner Music was immediately pulling out of its deal with Spotify.

Daniel Ek, Spotify's head honcho, took to Twitter to dispute the claims: “I’m in US atmo. To be clear; WMG are not pulling out of Spotify. Media is taken things out of context. So don’t worry – be happy ”

Ek may claim to be happy now – and Spotify's subscriber numbers are growing and it's adding new features like Similar Artists – but if other labels follow Warner Music's lead in criticising the service, he might not be smiling for much longer.

New MP3 format to be tested   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: user no longer registered

'MusicDNA' creators aim to shake up the music industry

Proposals for a new digital music format that its creators claim could take over from the MP3 have been unveiled.

Called MusicDNA, the format will go into beta testing in the spring with an aim to launching properly in the summer. Among its primary aims is to allow music fans to download complete artist packages that include music, videos, pictures, the option to buy merchandise and access to official blog and Twitter posts written by musicians, reports BBC News.

Among the labels to sign up to MusicDNA are Beggars Group, which owns Rough Trade (The Strokes, Mystery Jets), 4AD (The Big Pink, TV On The Radio), Matador Records (Sonic Youth) and XL Recordings (Vampire Weekend, MIA).

Unveiled by representatives at the Midem Industry Conference in Cannes, MusicDNA aims to be an ever-growing format which will have new information added to it as time progresses.

Developer Dagfinn Bach, who created MusicDNA, said that the format was more versatile than normal MP3s.

"We can deliver a file that is extremely searchable and can carry up to 32GB of extra information in the file itself," Bach explained. "And it will be dynamically updatable so that every time the user is connected, his file will be updated."

The format is likely to receive competition from the iTunes LP format, which also groups together music, videos and related content.

How to Shoot a Music Video   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: user no longer registered

Why Make a Music Video?
Having a music video can help promote your band, through video and social networking sites such as Musicvids.tv (which happens to be both). As well as by getting exposure on national television. If you're a film maker making a music video is a good way of getting exposure and experience and bands are often happy to give you a creative free reign. A video doesn't need to cost a fortune what's important is having a good idea and working within your budget.

What Will you Need?
At the very basic, a camera and a person who is willing to be director, producer, editor, the whole package! Realistically however, the following are required:

    • Camera person – At least one, and maybe more.
    • Lighting Person – If you're filming inside you'll need lighting, and someone to look after it.
    • Director/dogsbody – You need someone in charge of the shoot, making sure everything is running smoothly, and who can go buy batteries when you need them; essentially a producer.

Also, an editor and some video editing software would also be ideal. Sony Vegas Pro 8 is great piece of software for a professional looking amateur venture and although it does cost quite a bit, the ends will be worth every penny.

Planning
This is the usual basic kind of planning. Draw up some storyboards and annotate them with every detail including who will be in the shot, lighting directions and the music timeframe the scenes will correspond to. Remember, if you can get your hands on some stock footage that you want to include in the video, now would be the best time to obtain it. How long are the stock sections that you are using? Where in your storyboard do they slot in?

Filming
Nothing to say here except stick to the plan! Make sure everything is organised. If you have footage of live singing and playing, make sure you know exactly what you need for which part of the song. The best amateur camera you can use here would be a HDV camcorder. Do not bother with HD camcorders, the editing will take a lot longer and if you are posting to a website then there would be no need for High Definition. Just make sure the camera is able to negotiate with High Quality. Remeber, choose something which has a good optical zoom range, do not use digital zoom.

Editing
Follow the advice of individual software programs. Make sure you know exactly how to use the software and do not forget about frame rate correction; if you find the audio and video of live playing or singing is out of sync, you will need to sync them manually if you do not transfer footage at a correct frame rate.

That should be that. Go out there and give it a go.
